Single Tooth Implant vs Dental Bridge: Making the Right Choice

Single Tooth Implant vs Dental Bridge: Making the Right Choice

Lost a Tooth? Implant or Bridge - How to Decide

Losing a tooth is never ideal, but the good news is that modern dentistry gives you solid options for replacing it. The two main contenders: a single dental implant or a traditional bridge.

Both work. Both look natural. But they're fundamentally different approaches, and the right one depends on your specific situation.

How They Actually Work

An implant is a standalone replacement. A titanium post goes into the bone, and a custom crown sits on top. It doesn't touch or involve any neighbouring teeth.

A bridge uses the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors. These teeth are reshaped and fitted with crowns, and a false tooth hangs between them, filling the gap.

The Trade-offs Nobody Mentions

Here's what matters in practice:

Your healthy teeth stay untouched with an implant. This is probably the biggest advantage. A bridge requires reshaping two perfectly good teeth to support the prosthetic. Once that enamel is removed, it's gone.

A bridge is faster. If time is a factor, a bridge can be done in a couple of weeks. An implant requires months for the bone to heal around it.

Bone preservation matters long-term. When you lose a tooth, the bone underneath starts to shrink because there's nothing stimulating it. An implant acts like a tooth root and maintains that bone. A bridge doesn't.

When a Bridge Makes More Sense

  • The teeth on either side already need crowns (they're damaged or heavily filled)
  • Health conditions make surgery inadvisable
  • You need a faster solution
  • Budget constraints are a significant factor

When an Implant Makes More Sense

  • The neighbouring teeth are healthy and strong
  • You want to preserve bone in the area long-term
  • You prefer something that stands on its own
  • You're thinking about the longest-lasting option

There's No Wrong Answer

Both options have strong track records. Dr. Cho will assess your specific situation - including the health of surrounding teeth, your bone quality, and your preferences - and give you an honest recommendation.

Sometimes the answer isn't obvious, and that's okay. That's what consultations are for.
